I have medium brown hair that has a color on it already, I have fragile hair that is thin, what is the least damaging way to give myself heavy highlights without going to a salon.

from a cosmetologists stand point. with fragile hair and color already on the hair i don't suggest doing it yourself. the lighter you want to go the more damaged it can become and in some instances the hair can actually melt especially if color is already on the hair. is the color a darker shade than your natural color or lighter? this also affects what you should use. either way if you have roots that have grown out and you do it yourself you may get an uneven (visibly uneven) color result. when you say heavy do you mean chunky or exteremely light? when you say heavy to a hair dresser they think chunky or lots of highlights. i think your best bet is to go to the pros with your hair type. good luck!

Try a coloring that is made especially for dark hair, such as loreal. They lighten even black hair.

DON'T DO IT YOURSELF! The only way to get heavy highlights on already colored hair would be to use a hair bleach. You will permanently damage the hair and make it fall out.BELIEVE me I have been a blond my entire life, after a few good "oh I'll just do it myself" mistakes, I had to practically shave my head and start all over. If you want highlights, go to a salon, even a cheap one will work. But you will definitely lose some hair if you do it yourself.

If you do it yourself, make sure you leave in on your hair for less time then it says. I have very fine hair too and my stylist told me never leave the dye on as long as they say, it is toooooo long.

So if it says 25-30 min, only go 15 min!!

But if I were you and your already having a problem, maybe hold off a while or see a salon.

If your hair isn't to long get the products that u use the cap u will get good results and it will look more natural n it doesn't kill the hair as much as doing it with foil cause u use less hair even though it looks like u have but thats why the cap is good because it spreads out over your head a lot more and you can do just the top or all over.There should b an 1800 number on the box call it .It's worth it because what people don't know well some is that to get the colour that u want you have to sometimes use to differents haircolours mixed together to get the colour on the box.Also some types r stronger and they can let u know which one is best for your typ hair i used loreal xx icey blonde well i have fine hair to n it came out alright and didn't kill my hair which other products have done in the past.
