Need advice on dying my blond(dyed) hair back to my natural medium brown?

I have naturally medium brown hair and have been dying it very light blond for about 2 years. I really want to dye it back to my natural colour so that I can then grow it out. I can't really afford to go to the hairdressers but have heard if I just dye it back at home it will go green. Does anyone know if this is true and if so do they know if what I can do to combat this? or is my only option to go to the hairdressers. I have also just dyed my hair so how long do you recommend waiting before I try this?

First of all, im a hairdresser

so whoever said "it wont go green, whoever said that is crazy" is lying. It can actually go green. Obviously not bright green but it looks dull, flat and a sort of kahki colour.

First of all, your hair was brown, to make it lighter they bleached it and stripped out all the colour pigment (brown hair has a lot of red and brown pigment in it) so, you have no pigment in your hair except for yellow.

Now, if you put a colour straight over blonde, and you put say a natural brown on it, it has no RED in it so it will look sort of green.

the underlying pigment in brown hair is red

so if you're going to colour it back what you have to do first is "fill" the blonde, which means putting the pigment back in... so you'll need to put a red over it first and THEN the brown.

I know some people do their hair at home, and it all works out fine but if you're one of the ones who isnt so experienced, you could run into trouble and then have to pay more money to get it fixed and you'll be risking the health of your hair.

My advice, if you're serious and want you hair to be nice and healthy again is to save youre money until you can afford to go to the hairdressers. they do hair for a living, its their job.. they are the specialists. Would you do work on your own car at home if you read the instruction manual and thought you knew how it all worked? im guessing the answer is no.

your hair will NOT turn green, whoever told u that is crazy. i recomened using hydrience or herbal essences hair dye. just follow the directions on the box, its pretty simple. i would say wait two weeks and get a hot oil treatment in ur hair before u dye it again to avoid over processing. hot oil treatments are available for about a dollar at any store.

Your hair won't turn green, but after years of dying it will make the ends VERY porous - they will suck in the color very quickly. DO your roots first and them comb the color through the rest of the hair and let process for a shorter amount of time. It would still serve you best to have a professional do it the first time. I did it myself (went from light blonde to chestnut brown with a home kit designed to be mild) and I ended up at the salon having the color stripped off and having the stylist color it. It would have been far cheaper to go to him in the first place. It is your head! Don't mess around - see a professional! Good Luck!
